Information for NursesThe Neuroscience Center at Allegheny General Hospital brings together several disciplines and a diverse patient population. A broad array of both inpatient and outpatient areas foster a wide variety of work experiences for both the novice and seasoned RN or LPN. In this department, the collaborative efforts of the physician and nursing teams have developed a comprehensive approach that often involves multiple services/specialties. The diversity of the patients, high acuity of care, and fast-paced nature of the work offer nurses daily opportunities for professional growth, satisfaction, and challenge. The nursing areas that specialize in the care of the neuroscience patients include a 23 bed Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, a 37 bed Neuroscience Unit, and an 8 bed Stroke Telemetry Unit. Neuroscience nurses receive an extensive orientation and continuing education to ensure that they utilize the most current nursing practices in providing patient care. The nurses are not only educated in their specialty, but are also encouraged to achieve and maintain the CNRN (Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse) credential. Our neuroscience nurses have presented lectures on the national level, have published in multiple professional journals and have participated in nursing research projects related to the advancement of patient care. They also conduct continuing educations conferences on various neuroscience nursing issues for nurses in the tri-state area.
